Farncombe is one of the group of villages belonging to the town of Godalming. Godalming grew from an ancient saxon settlement believed to be owned by a saxon proprietor, Godhelm and is situated in a beautiful valley surrounded by wooded hills. The Saxons referred to this type of location as an ‘ing,’ so the settlement became known as Godhelming. Even today the inhabitants of Godalming are still referred to as Godhelmians. Farncombe was named after its natural environment of a valley of ferns and was recorded in the Domesday book of 1086 as Fernecome. Archaelogical finds included items from the Bronze age from the Northbourne Estate and evidence of a Roman Villa in the nearby hamlet of Binscombe.
